AST Weather Blog: Tropical system could develop in the Atlantic within the next week

A weak tropical wave is moving across the Atlantic, approaching the Leeward Islands and eventually Puerto Rico. It will not likely develop before it reaches those islands. But the wave will continue moving west and northwest, eventually approaching the Bahamas and parts of Florida over the weekend into early next week.

As it approaches, it could become a bit more organized. As of Tuesday afternoon, there was a 60 percent chance of this happening. The question is, how quickly does it do so? This is one of the key factors that may help us determine its next track.

From there, models have suggested it could curve north toward the east coasts of Georgia and the Carolinas. Others have suggested that development is delayed, but that it could cross the Florida Peninsula and enter the Gulf of Mexico before strengthening then.

The chances of this system having an impact on us in Arkansas is very low. But if the system did reach the Gulf of Mexico, those chances go up. Of course, if there are any impacts here in Arkansas; it would be well over a week away from now. So we have some time to monitor the situation. Be sure to stay with the Arkansas Storm Team for updates.
