Dexter King’s death from prostate cancer should be a wakeup call for black men in Virginia

Alive is reporting that Dexter King the son of Dr. Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King has died at 62 from prostate cancer. The King Center announced that he died peacefully at his California home on Monday, January 22.

Black men have a higher rate of prostate cancer

Henry Ford Health reports that prostate cancer mutates differently in African American males and leads to their having a higher rate of diagnosis than other races. Studies from Alton Memorial Hospital on Veterans in Virginia reveal that black males in the Commonwealth are twice as likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer as white men.

Dexter was the youngest child of Dr. King

Dexter Scott King was named for the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery Alabama where his father had his first job as a pastor. His middle name is his mother’s maiden name.

Dexter King was the youngest of the King’s 4 children. His sister Yolanda preceded him in death. Dexter was married to Leah Weber (per CNN) and they have no children.
