Three killed in fiery head-on collision on California’s Highway 101; Both drivers, passenger killed

Officials from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Humboldt Area Office are actively investigating a tragic triple-fatal crash that occurred on Highway 101 (US-101) late Sunday night. The incident involved a wrong-way driver and resulted in a devastating head-on collision.

According to the CHP, the CHP Humboldt Communications Center (HCC) received a distressing report at 10:37 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, indicating that a 2015 Toyota Tacoma was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of US-101.

A mere six minutes later, at 10:43 p.m., another report reached the HCC, this time detailing a head-on collision on southbound US-101 near Metropolitan Road. Emergency response teams swiftly mobilized to the scene.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a grim sight—both the 2015 Toyota Tacoma and a 2010 Mercedes Benz C300 were engulfed in flames, obstructing the southbound lanes. Medical personnel on the scene confirmed the tragic outcome, determining that the driver of the Tacoma, currently unidentified, had succumbed to the collision.
