California State Senator Scott Wiener has introduced a groundbreaking bill that, if passed, will mandate the installation of speed-limiting devices on all vehicles in the state by 2027. The proposed legislation raises questions about safety, technology, and the balance between regulation and individual freedom on our roads.
Senate Bill 961, as it is known, would require every passenger vehicle, truck, and bus manufactured or sold in California to be equipped with “speed governors.” These devices are designed to physically slow cars that travel more than 10 mph over the speed limit.
Senator Wiener argues that this initiative is an essential step towards reducing traffic accident fatalities in the state. According to statistics, there were 4,407 automobile-related deaths in California in 2022, marking a staggering 22% increase from 2019.
