The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Western Plumas County/Lassen Park and the West Slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada, in anticipation of heavy snowfall and gusty winds that could significantly impact the region. The watch is effective from Wednesday morning through Friday morning.
Forecasters predict the possibility of heavy snow, with total accumulations ranging from 1 to 2 feet and locally up to 3 feet at mountain peaks. Alongside the snowfall, winds could gust as high as 50 to 60 mph, creating challenging weather conditions.
Snow levels are expected to start at 6000 to 7000 feet on Wednesday, gradually lowering to 4000 to 5000 feet on Thursday, and reaching as low as 3500 feet by Friday morning. The heaviest snowfall accumulations are anticipated above 6000 feet.
The potential impacts of this winter storm include travel difficulties ranging from delays to near impossibility. Snow-covered roads and reduced visibility, combined with gusty winds, may lead to chain controls, road closures, and hazardous driving conditions. The NWS warns that travel during this period could be dangerous, urging residents to exercise caution and stay updated on the latest forecasts.
