Federal officials said on Thursday that there could have been a breakthrough in their lengthy probe into the slaughter of wild burros in California’s Mojave Desert over five years ago.

On August 13, 2019, a 50-mile (80-kilometer) stretch of Interstate 15 northeast of Los Angeles revealed the bodies of 19 burros that had been shot.

Federal law protects wild burros. Since their days as pack animals for the hordes of people who flocked to California during the Gold Rush, they have also become an iconic symbol of the American Southwest.

The 2008 Toyota extended cab truck in gray or silver with flared fenders and the 2008 Toyota extended cab pickup in white with a white camper shell and white rims are the subjects of attention, according to the Bureau of Land Management’s inspectors.

The agency claimed in a statement that both trucks were last spotted in the parking area of Whiskey Pete’s Hotel and Casino in Primm, Nevada. The vehicles were seen driving together on that particular stretch of the highway on the day of the deaths.
