Stickers for Carpool Lanes that Permit Lone Drivers May Soon be Discontinued.

Stickers for Clean Air Vehicles that are still valid were recently discussed. My 2019 Kia is electric only. Are you trying to tell me that my stickers have an expiration date? Then I’m not allowed to drive in the lane by myself? From Manhattan Beach, Steve Legare.

Indeed, they’re all expiry dates, just like bread loaves.

Only stickers in the colors burgundy, lime green, yellow, and blue currently let drivers use the carpool lane without a passenger. The first three colors will run out on September 30, 2025; those with blue stickers will only have this year left.

To reduce emissions, the state began offering stickers in waves to owners of newly certified zero- or low-emission automobiles and trucks, encouraging them to replace gas-powered vehicles on the road. The state withholds the carrot for a wave of automobiles after a period, maybe a couple of years. Officers can distinguish between waves by using a distinct color or sticker design.

All of this began in 1999 through the California Legislature.
