Chipotle Faces Minimum Wage Hike: Company Eyes Price Increase

Chipotle, the California-based restaurant has 475 locations in the Golden State. They account for 14% of the company’s restaurants according to a February 8, Business Insider report (BI). The Burrito chain will be subject to new state legislation known as AB1228 which will mandate a $20. an hour minimum wage for fast food workers.

The BI article quoted Jack Hartung, Chipotle’s chief financial and administrative officer making these comments during a recent earnings report call.

We know we have to take something as a significant increase when you talk about a 20%-ish increase in wages,

The company currently pays its CA hourly employees an average of $17. an hour. As a labor cost-cutting measure, the company is looking into robotics to perform some food preparation tasks.

Laurie Schalow, Chipotle’s chief corporate affairs officer told BI that the increase should be in the mid-single digits.

AB1228 will take effect in April.
