FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – California wolves have killed 18 livestock since August 2023, according to wolf depredation reports posted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).
These reports were posted as part of CDFW’s evaluation of the Wolf-Livestock Compensation Pilot Program. According to wolf.org , depredation is when wolves or other predators kill or maim domestic animals.
This endangered species was found in Tulare County
According to the CDFW, the depredation reports confirm 16 wolf depredations – totaling a loss of 18 livestock. State officials say there is a program in place to compensate livestock producers for livestock being lost.
According to the state, the gray wolf is a recovering endangered species protected under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Federal Endangered Species Act. The native species was likely forced out of California in the 1920s, according to wildlife.ca.gov .
