Magnitude 4.1 earthquake strikes California region rocked this week by swarm of temblors

Late Tuesday night, Imperial County, located east of San Diego, experienced a significant seismic event as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake rattled the region.

The quake struck at 11:53 p.m., with its epicenter approximately 6.2 miles north of Westmorland, a part of the El Centro Metropolitan Area, along the California-Mexico border, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The seismic activity occurred at a depth of around 6.7 miles.

In the minutes following the main quake, a series of smaller tremors were recorded in the same vicinity.

A magnitude 2.5 earthquake hit first at 11:49 p.m., centered about 6.2 miles west of Calipatria in Imperial County. This was followed by a 2.6-magnitude quake at 11:55 p.m., and another 2.5-magnitude quake at 11:56 p.m., as reported by the USGS.

Residents in Imperial, Riverside, and San Diego counties reported feeling the strongest tremors, as indicated by the USGS’s “Did You Feel It?” map.

This seismic activity follows closely on the heels of another significant earthquake in the region. Early Monday morning, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck near El Centro, also in Imperial County, triggering a series of subsequent smaller quakes.
