One of California’s largest area codes getting new digits

(FOX40.COM) — The 530 area code has become synonymous with those living in the more rural and rugged areas of northeast California. Still, residents in that area may soon find their phone numbers starting with a new three number combination.

In 1997, the 530 area code was established to ease the increased load on the 916 area code.

California Public Utilities Commission

According to a new release from the California Public Utilities Commission, the area served by the 530 area code will now be overlaid with the 837 area code starting on Jan. 31, 2025.

The overlay was approved in 2023 to reduce the increased demand of new telephone numbers in 530 area code region.

Those with existing 530 numbers will not see a change in their area code and can expect the price of a call, coverage area and other rates and services to remain the same.
