Governor Newsom Ends Drought Declaration in 19 California Counties Amid Improved Water Conditions

With California’s water year nearing its end, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the termination of the drought state of emergency in 19 counties, thanks to improved water conditions following two wet winters. However, the emergency remains in effect for 39 counties where long-term recovery from the state’s historic drought continues.

This action follows the rollback of some drought provisions last year and is part of a phased approach based on regional water conditions. While the drought emergency has been lifted in key coastal and desert counties, including Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Clara, the state remains focused on addressing groundwater depletion and other drought impacts in areas like the Sacramento and San Joaquin River basins.

Governor Newsom emphasized the need for a climate-resilient water system, noting, “California and the West experience extreme weather swings that exacerbate our water challenges. This targeted action is responsive to current conditions while continuing the support for future-proofing water supplies.”
