The Avenal earthquake was reported shortly after a 3.5-magnitude earthquake was reported in California on Tuesday. The earthquake was centered in Ontario at a depth of 4.1 kilometers (about three miles).

The California earthquakes were reported one day after a 2.7-magnitude earthquake was reported in Idaho on Monday (September 30), according to the United States Geological Survey . The earthquake was centered in Bonners Ferry at a depth of 9.1 kilometers (about 5.7 miles).

The Idaho earthquake was reported days after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake was reported along the island country of Mauritius last Thursday (September 26), according to the United States Geological Survey . The earthquake was centered near the RĂ©union region at a depth of 10.0 kilometers (about six miles).
