American Water Celebrates 50 Years of the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act

American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., announced today the launch of a nationwide celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). This landmark legislation, passed by Congress in 1974, was designed to protect public health by regulating the nation’s drinking water supply. The celebration will span 50 days, beginning today and continuing through December 16, 2024.

American Water recognizes the significant improvements made in water quality over the past five decades but stresses the importance of ongoing investment to tackle emerging challenges in water safety. The company plans to invest between $34 to $38 billion in infrastructure repairs, replacements, and system resiliency over the next decade.
