A major step forward for conservation in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta was taken today as the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and Bureau of Reclamation broke ground on the $69.4 million Prospect Island Tidal Habitat Restoration Project. Spanning 1,600 acres in Solano County, this project aims to enhance habitats for endangered species like Delta smelt and Chinook salmon, while supporting the long-term operation of critical water systems such as the Central Valley Project and State Water Project.
With $46 million in funding from Reclamation, the project will boost aquatic food web productivity, improve water quality, and provide climate resilience. It also contributes to fulfilling the state’s commitment to create 8,000 acres of new tidal habitat, supporting broader environmental goals like carbon sequestration and ecosystem restoration.
