California Representative Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) expressed deep concern about the United States’ ability to meet its environmental and electrification objectives due to sluggish domestic copper production. Speaking on the House floor, LaMalfa stressed the importance of enhancing access to crucial minerals, especially copper, to support the nation’s ambitious electric vehicle and CO2 reduction plans.
LaMalfa emphasized copper’s vital role in U.S. electrification efforts, spanning from electric vehicles to renewable energy infrastructure. He stated, “Copper is extremely important to move forward with any of the technology that Americans are going to require.” Despite soaring demand, U.S. copper production has lagged, potentially jeopardizing the country’s environmental goals.
Permitting Process Hurdles
LaMalfa highlighted the protracted permitting process for new copper mines, which can take over two decades from conception to production. He argued that this puts the U.S. at a competitive disadvantage compared to countries like China, where mine approvals are typically faster and less burdened by regulations.
