California Secures $43.7 million in Federal Funding to Shield Protected Communities, Keep the Peace

Governor Gavin Newsom has unveiled over $43.7 million in federal funding to strengthen security at 311 California nonprofit and faith-based organizations, including synagogues, mosques, and institutions representing communities targeted by hate crimes. The grants, part of FEMA’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program, aim to enhance safety measures like reinforced doors, high-intensity lighting, and access control systems.

“An attack against any community is an attack against our entire state and values,” Newsom stated, emphasizing California’s commitment to protecting its residents.

Cal OES Director Nancy Ward added, “California is dedicated to helping our communities stay safe from violent hate crimes.”

The funding comes as hate crimes against Jewish, Muslim, and LGBTQ+ communities rise, with anti-Black bias crimes remaining the most frequent in the state.
