Colorado Gov. Jared Polis talks housing, public safety, passenger rail in Pueblo speech

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis traveled down to Pueblo Friday morning to deliver a regional State of the State address, in which he emphasized the need for additional housing and bolstering public safety in a 15-minute address.

At the Occhiato Ballroom at Colorado State University Pueblo, Polis addressed a crowd of guests that included some local elected officials — such as state legislators and two county commissioners — as well as leaders of some local nonprofits and businesses.

His brief trip to Pueblo also included a roundtable discussion at Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center and a stop at Minnequa Elementary School. Polis also had a meeting with Pueblo’s new Mayor-elect Heather Graham, who bested Nick Gradisar in the Tuesday runoff election, that was not open to the press.

Here are some of the takeaways from his address.

Public safety and help from the state

Polis said law enforcement has traditionally been funded locally, but that the state of Colorado has been doing more to help local governments fund public safety.
