Bill to cut Colorado income taxes put on hold

DENVER (KDVR) — A bill to lower the Colorado income tax has been postponed indefinitely at the Capitol. The Republican-backed bill was struggling to gain traction among Democrats, even though Gov. Jared Polis has voiced his support for income tax reductions.

Political analysts weighed in on this week’s “ Colorado Point of View .”

Democratic strategist Andy Boian said it’s not that Democrats don’t want to lower taxes, but they are instead prioritizing funding for local governments.

“It’s the reality of we have to finance and fund what we need to. And we’re not, right now, at the levels we need to, and not staying competitive enough in the nation as a state to bring business to Colorado,” Boian said.

Republican strategist Michael Fields disagreed, saying lower taxes would incentivize more businesses to come to Colorado.

“Governor Polis has been a vocal supporter of cutting the income tax. The problem is he doesn’t have the leadership to get his party to come along with it,” Fields said.
