Evans expresses support for repealing ACA in 8th District debate

Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo and Republican rival Gabe Evans staked out opposite positions in a televised debate for Colorado’s most high-profile contest.

Why it matters: The 30-minute back-and-forth Friday between the 8th Congressional District candidates on CBS Colorado showcased the vast differences between the candidates on key issues in the 2024 election.

Zoom in: Here’s a look at the issues and what the candidates said.

Health care: Evans, a state lawmaker, came under attack for his positions on health care.

  • He expressed support for repealing the Affordable Care Act, saying it didn’t do enough to stem rising costs. “We have to go back to making sure we are making health care actually affordable,” he said.
  • Caraveo, a pediatrician, blasted him for opposing a state law to cap the cost of epinephrine auto-injectors (known as epi pens) at $60 for a two pack. Evans said the free market should control drug costs.

Immigration: Both candidates are children of migrants and sputtered on the how to handle newcomers arriving in the country illegally.
