First major winter storm New Mexico to Colorado, flash flooding, severe storms Texas & Oklahoma

The first major winter storm is underway in the Southern Rockies and we have numerous Winter Storm Warnings for much of New Mexico and Colorado including the city of Denver where a foot of snow is forecast. Some of the mountains in both states could see 2 to 3 feet of snow before this storm is all said and done.

This storm system is also going to be producing heavy rain and potential flash flooding for parts of Central and Northwest Texas into Oklahoma. This will also be coupled with severe thunderstorm and tornado risk and the Storm Prediction Center is indicating such risks exits today and also for Friday and Saturday.

This developing storm system will eventually head for the Great Lakes and the assoicated cold front will move eastward bringing rain to the Ohio Valley and eventually the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic. The pattern has been so dry that some areas from Southern New England to the Northern Mid Atlantic have seen less than a quarter of an inch of rain over the last 9 weeks and drought conditions continue to spread in this area.
