Snow storm train to haul in up to 30 inches for Colorado’s mountains by New Year’s Whiteout snow report

Snowy weather has returned to Colorado’s high country after some light snow fell around Christmas Day and the day after.

Larger scale snow events Friday into Saturday and Sunday night through Monday night are forecast to bring between 10-20 inches across the state, with one weather model still predicting 60-plus inches for parts of the northern mountains.

Powder day potential on multiple days this weekend and early next week are more than likely and soft/light powder days almost definitely. Silverton opens Saturday, bringing every chair-lift accessed ski area open for winter 2024-25 except Hesperus due to a seasonal-closure maintenance issue.

Recap:

Thursday brought light amounts of snow to Colorado’s ski areas in the form of 2-7 inches, mostly in the northern mountains, and freshened the slopes up for Friday skiing and riding, adding on to the 1-6 inches that fell on Christmas Day.

Southwestern ski area Purgatory finally received measurable snow for Thursday morning’s report, with 7 inches on the slopes for first chair. The month of December has not been gracious to Purgatory, where it has only recorded 9 inches of snow total.
