Help wanted in Delaware not easily found

MIDDLETOWN — The act of securing employees continues to vex Delaware employers, according to those who do the hiring.

Bob Older, the founder and president of the Delaware Small Business Chamber, can attest to that.

“The main issues we are hearing is that many of our business owners are having trouble finding anyone to work, let alone a quality person,” he said.

One reason? Many candidates “want to be overpaid and work from home.”

In his role overseeing a growing organization with around 200 members, Mr. Older said a big portion of them is struggling with recruiting.

“Many of our members have no employees, but, of those that do, more than half of them are having issues finding help, or qualified help,” he noted, adding that skill sets are hard to find throughout the job sector.

“We are hearing issues with all industries at all levels of employment,” he said.

Further, that dearth of staff has a profound effect on operational capacity.

“We have heard of some of our businesses having to close early or change hours to reflect the available staff,” he said. “Services and support will most likely be affected the most.
