The Delaware Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) was recognized by the 152nd General Assembly on January 23, 2024, for ten years of service. The recognition was initiated by Rep. Kimberly Williams and Sen. Jack Walsh through House Concurrent Resolution 81. The OAW, formed in November 2013, is committed to the welfare of companion animals and the promotion of the human-animal bond.

Rep. Kimberly Williams commended the OAW for its work in enhancing the living conditions for pets and their owners. She noted the OAW’s partnerships with local animal shelters, rescues, and veterinarians, contributing to Delaware’s status as the first no-kill animal shelter state.

The OAW was formed based on the recommendations of a State Animal Welfare Taskforce in 2012. The taskforce, made up of policymakers, veterinarians, and shelter directors, was tasked with examining companion animal issues and suggesting improvements. The OAW’s formation centralized the management of pet programs and services, simplifying the process for residents.
