The Delaware Art Museum will be the final stop for the national tour of the exhibition, ‘There Is a Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art.’ The exhibition opens on March 16, 2024, and runs until May 26, 2024. It explores the portrayal of Black women in American art history over the past 200 years. The exhibition will be in the Fusco Gallery and is included in the Museum’s entry fee. It features over 40 works from the Bowdoin College Museum of Art (BMCA) collection, supplemented by pieces from the Delaware Art Museum’s collection.
Elizabeth S. Humphrey, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Delaware and a Bowdoin Class of 2014 alumna, curated the exhibition. It first opened at the BCMA in 2021 and has been touring with support from the Art Bridges Foundation. The exhibition includes works by notable 20th and 21st-century artists and a selection of 19th-century works.
Humphrey hopes the exhibition will encourage audiences to engage with often overlooked artists and provide a platform for their works to be recognized. In Delaware, the works from Bowdoin will be displayed alongside pieces from DelArt’s collection, bringing the total object count to 60.
