GREENWOOD — Last weekend, Hurricane Helene ripped through the Southeast, destroying many homes in several towns and leaving dozens dead.
And, since the monster storm cleared, millions have been dealing with a lack of electricity.
To aid with recovery, Delaware Electric Cooperative delivered a nine-person crew, plus three bucket trucks, a digger and supplies, to Blue Ridge, North Carolina, on Tuesday.
“We abide by seven cooperative principles,” said Lauren Irby, the manager of public relations and community affairs for the agency. “One of the principles is cooperation among cooperatives. That is a big value that we hold. We help each other when we can. We provide mutual aid.”
To that end, co-ops across the world partner to ensure their areas of service are protected.
“We have a unique business model as a cooperative,” Ms. Irby said. “We are a not-for-profit, member-owned co-op, and we are a part of regional, national and international co-ops that work together and are not in competition with each other.”
