Delaware Debates spark conversation around outside political influence, candidate participation

NEWARK — On Wednesday and Thursday, candidates for statewide seats debated their policy positions as a part of the University of Delaware’s “Delaware Debates” series.

It offered an opportunity for those seeking office in the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate and Delaware governor to convince voters why they are the right person for their respective job.

It was a unique set up all around, as the lone contested debate took place Thursday night between the First State’s two gubernatorial candidates — Democratic New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer and Republican House Minority Leader Mike Ramone, R-Pike Creek.

Absences in the congressional races resulted in two solo “debates,” as candidates fielded questions from moderator and former CNN journalist Ralph Begleiter.

The lone contested debate saw Mr. Meyer and Rep. Ramone debate topics like climate, the economy, education, and how they would wield veto power as the state’s chief executive.

Though the debate was largely civil, there were blips of contention sprinkled throughout the conversation.
