Legislators highlight Laurel expungement fair as opportunity for second chances

LAUREL — It’s all about giving people another chance

That’s what state Sen. Darius Brown, D-Wilmington said during a media preview Wednesday ahead of next week’s expungement fair at the Laurel Public Library.

The event — which comes in partnership with the Office of Defense Services, State Bureau of Identification, the Department of Labor’s APEX program and the General Assembly — allows Delawareans to get free legal counseling on the expungement process

“The importance of this is that we’re able to help individuals obtain employment, housing, education and remove this barrier — this stigma, this label, this branding that has prohibited (former offenders) for really living out their full potential and having access and opportunity for themselves and their families,” Sen Brown said.

“It is about second chances, and I like to say not just second chances, but another chance.”

Delaware passed the Adult Expungement Reform Act in 2019, which allowed individuals arrested or convicted of low-level charges to be eligible for the expanded expungement process.
