Snow and cold temperatures challenge Delaware’s farmers

GEORGETOWN — Again and again Monday, workers perched on ladders at Stag Run Farm brushed off the tops of the facility’s greenhouses as the snow fell.

Owner Lenore Brady hoped to avoid the structures collapsing under the many inches of frozen precipitation, which could ruin the winter crops inside and require money to be spent on fixing the buildings.

On Tuesday, she reported that, all things considered, the farm had weathered the storm pretty well.

“Right now, with what we’ve had, we’re pretty fortunate,” Ms. Brady said. “We were lucky enough not to get the ice that would have hurt us really bad.”

Farmers’ challenges can be immense during the winter, and this week’s snowstorm was unlike any Ms. Brady had seen in 25 years.

“It was a big one,” she said.

Stag Run Farm has 1,500 apple trees, Ms. Brady continued, so “you’re going to get some breakage. But let’s just say it could have been worse. It’s not that bad.”

Regardless, the weather remains a daily concern, and she was monitoring more snowy conditions that could arrive this weekend.
