Cicada invasion: Trillions to emerge in rare Double Brood event not seen since 1803

Trillions of cicadas are coming to the U.S. in a rare double brood event. This Spring, trillions of Cicadas will emerge across the Southeast and Midwest in a high decibel noise-making mating ritual. Trillions of winged insects will rise up from their underground homes for this once in a lifetime event.

Six species of Cicadas are home to the Eastern US. They’re known as Brood X. The significance of this historic event is that Cicadas from Brood XIII, a 17-year brood, and Brood XIX, a 13-year brood, will co-emerge in a rare synchronized event that hasn’t occurred since 1803 and won’t happen again for 221 years.

The mass co-emergence of noisy red-eyed winged creatures will be disturbing to many and of great interest to others. These insects emit a high-pitched sound that can reach over 100 decibels! That would be comparable to a jackhammer, subway train, or a motorcycle. With billions of these creatures emerging together, this will sound like quite a cinematic celebration of noise!
