50-Year Mystery: FDLE Pleads for Public’s Help to Crack One of Florida’s Oldest Cold Cases

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is once again seeking the public’s assistance in solving the 50-year-old murder of James Norris, a case that dates back to 1974. At the time of his death, Norris was just 24 years old, and his unsolved homicide remains one of the oldest active investigations in the state.

Norris’s murder is Dixie County’s longest-standing cold case, and investigators believe that even one new tip could be the key to finally breaking it open.

Authorities are urging anyone with information, particularly those who may have connections to Miami, Panama City, Steinhatchee, or Citrus County, Florida, to come forward.

“Over the years that we’ve investigated this we’ve gotten a lot of the pieces of the puzzle. Someone could be holding a piece of the puzzle that they may not realize fits into the big picture,” said FDLE Special Agent Supervisor Mike Kennedy. “If you were familiar with the Miami, Crystal River or Steinhatchee areas in 1974, you may have a piece of the puzzle that is critical to solving this case.”
