SECO Energy unveils $256 million expansion project as Central Florida’s population booms

SUMTERVILLE — SECO Energy is growing, and so is Central Florida.

The utility serves 80 percent of the homes in Sumter County and 40 percent of Lake County. It has gained around 145,000 customers over the past 25 years.

In response to the area’s booming population and the company’s bigger customer base, the cooperative recently unveiled its “SECO Energy Expansion and Improvement Plan” — a five-year project that includes expanding its headquarters building in Sumter County, and new operations centers and warehouses in Lake, Marion and Sumter counties.

The company’s project is slated to break ground in January 2026 in tandem with a major system-wide construction work plan that includes thousands of new service connections, several new substations and miles of transmission lines to deliver power generated by Seminole Electric Cooperative .

When will the project be finished?

The revamped SECO Energy project has completion pegged for 2028.

“We are a not-for-profit,” Curtis Wynn, SECO Energy’s CEO, emphasized in a phone conversation with the Daily Commercial.
