I was looking for another way to use up the spiral ham, without glaze, that I had leftover and I decided to make up a pot of ham chowder. This is a really simple and hearty chowder recipe. You will need the following ingredients:
Recipe:
1/2 pound of bacon, diced into small pieces
1 onion, diced finely
2 carrots, diced
3 tablespoons of flour
1 tablespoon of butter
2 cups of chicken broth
3 cups of whole milk
2 cups of ham, diced into bite size pieces
1 cup of fresh, canned or frozen sweet corn
3 – 4 medium russet potatoes, diced
8 oz of shredded colby jack cheese (or whatever type you like)
salt and pepper to taste
Heat a large sauce pan to medium heat and add the bacon and cook it until it is crisp. Remove the bacon using a slotted spoon and place it on a paper towel lined plate to drain.
Add the butter, carrots and the onions and cook these for about 5 minutes or until they are tender.
Sprinkle the flour in and stir this up and cook this for 2 minutes. Tip: The flour needs to be cooked or you will be able to taste the raw taste.
