The Georgia Environmental Finance Authority announced Monday it has provided scholarships for an electric vehicle (EV) charging technician course at Gwinnett Technical College.
GTC launched the program in November in response to growing demand for electric vehicle infrastructure, officials said. The participants in the program will have their tuition and personal protective equipment (PPE) covered, according to GEFA. The funding is part of the U.S. State Energy Program, and is based on similar scholarship programs GEFA funded to train building maintenance operators.
The EV Charging Technician course provide 50-hours of training where students learn about installing home and commercial EV chargers, EV charger commissioning, best practices for safety, problem solving and diagnosis, and networking needs and protocols.
GTC said it was partnering with Siemens on curriculum development, and Siemens has agreed to hire program graduations. Additionally, Siemens provided 16 chargers for the College’s new Charger Lab that will allow students to get hands-on training on how to commission chargers and troubleshoot problems that may arise.
