HECO restores power after initiating emergency outages on Big Island

HONOLULU (KHON2) — An unexpected loss of several large Hawaii Electric generators left some residents on Big Island without power for parts of the morning on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

HECO said that due to the loss of their generators at around 8:40 a.m., they were forced to initiate 30-minute rolling outages in various parts of the island to help prevent loss of power to even more customers.

The generators affected included their Kanoelehua CT-1, Puna CT-3, CT-4 and Hill 5 combustion turbine units. In addition, their Hamakua Energy was also not in full operation.

By around around 11:45 a.m., HECO said all power was restored.
