Hānau supporters seek to keep Hawaiian natural birth practices from being criminalized

HONOLULU (Island News) — Review continues for a bill aimed at protecting the rights of natural birth caregivers and traditional Hawaiian home birthing methods. Hawaii Revised Statute 457J became effective on July 1st of last year and set a very defined list of new requirements for any caregivers for home births. For many who have spent years working around hanau practices, the new regulations are seen logistically difficult or cost prohibitive. That sparked a demonstration at the Capital last June last year when it remained unclear what kinds of penalties natural birth caregivers might potentially face.
