In the last 24 hours, 465 earthquakes have rocked the area around Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, more than doubling the high volume of earthquakes experienced there in the prior 24 hours. USGS scientists are warning that the volcano can erupt with little warning, although any eruption is likely to occur within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and not near any residential areas. While the volcano is not erupting yet as of press time, USGS warns that an “eruption can occur in the future with little warning.” The volcano is being closely monitored by USGS scientists at Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, known as HVO for short.
