HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiian Electric’s grid is about to see some major upgrades.
According to HECO, regulators have approved $190 million in upgrades to Hawaii’s electric grid.
The Climate Resilience plan includes replacing and strengthening thousands of poles, more wildfire and flood mitigation and undergrounding of some distribution lines.
“That will cover roughly half the amount of the total $190 million that we’re looking to invest in the grid. So those bill impacts were essentially almost cut in half, you know, by the availability of this federal funding,” said HECO representative Darren Pai.
It will cost ratepayers more over a five-year implementation, but HECO said a federal infrastructure grant will help offset some of the sting.
