Strong winds, cooler temperatures ahead

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The most important change in the weather over the next several days will be a major change in the winds.

Strong winds through weekend into next week

Kona winds have been with us for a few weeks, but the trade winds will return late Friday and remain in place through the weekend and through next week.

A strong high-pressure center will develop northeast of Hawaii. This strong high will be relatively close to the state. This combination will produce high winds over Hawaii through the weekend and through half of next week.

The high will weaken and move farther from Hawaii next Thursday into Friday, reducing our winds.

The winds are expected to be 20-30 mph sustained with gusts up to 50 mph and possibly higher until Wednesday of next week.

The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory for Friday through Sunday. They will evaluate the situation this weekend and may need to extend the wind advisory beyond Sunday.

A High Wind Warning was also issued for the Big Island summits where wind gusts could be as high as 80 mph.
