Winds windy to breezy this week

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The winds were relatively strong this weekend with gusts up to 49 mph reported at a couple airport locations.

A windy weekend

The highest two wind gusts were both measured at 49 mph at the airports in Lanai City and Kailua-Kona. A 49 mph wind gust was reported at the Lanai City airport at 11 p.m. Saturday night and at the Kailua-Kona airport at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

As with these wind gusts and other high wind gusts across the island chain, time of day was not a factor. These high wind gusts were recorded at all times of day and night.

This wind event looks as if it peaked Saturday into Sunday and the remainder of this wind event should post sustained winds and wind gusts relatively lower than the numbers we saw this past weekend.

Easing winds through Wednesday

Monday morning, we continued to have breezy to windy easterly trade winds. Lihue had as high as a 31 mph sustained wind during the morning with other areas across Hawaii experiencing sustained winds in the 15 to 25 mph range. The breezy to, at times, windy conditions will remain in place Monday through Wednesday. The winds Monday will be slightly weaker than the winds Hawaii had Saturday and Sunday. This weakening trend with the winds should continue through Wednesday, but it will be a slow weakening trend, with the winds still at times being in the windy category.
