The measure would create the automated speed enforcement program which the Department of Transportation would oversee. The program would begin in Jan. 2025.
The bill states, the system would use vehicle sensors, cameras and speed measuring devices to take photos and videos of speeding vehicles and their license plate.
The cameras would be installed on poles on state or county highways determined by HDOT. Signs would be posted to notify drivers of the speed cameras in the area.
Similar to the red light camera program, the state’s third party contractor would then mail the registered owner of the vehicle the citation.
“If it is excessive speeding like 20 mph and over then it would be charged the maximum amount which would be $250 for a first offense,” said Sen. Brandon Elefante, (D) Aiea, Halawa, Pearlridge, Pearl City.
