Both Geanna Bradley and Isabella Kalua were taken out of public school to learn from home before their deaths.

According to Hawaii law, a parent only has to submit a notice once to the principal and then the child’s learning is in the hands of their parent or guardian.

The Department of Education website states it requires tests every few years from home schooled students. KHON2 asked late Friday if it is enforced, and whether Kalua and Bradley’s guardians provided progress reports at any point, but did not hear back.

Senator Kurt Fevella (R) sits on the Education Committee and spoke with KHON2 late Friday afternoon about the situation.

KHON2 showed him her school photo.

“That’s her school picture, you cannot tell me nobody not a teacher, or a counselor, principal, and I’m not blaming anyone, but someone should have seen or said something,” he said.
