Breezy trades to continue pushing in windward showers

HONOLULU (KHON2) – The islands are locked into a breezy and stable trade wind pattern.

A robust 1038 mb surface high anchored roughly 1300 miles north of Oahu is driving the trade winds.

While the trades have been gusty over and downwind of terrain, speeds have not reach advisory levels, and the Wind Advisory for portions of the Big Island and Maui County has been cancelled.

A mid-level ridge is maintaining stable conditions in the lower atmosphere, with an inversion based between 6000 to 8000 ft, and precipitable water is running slightly less than seasonal normal.

As a result, breezy trades are producing passing moderate showers over windward slopes, and aside from spotty showers on the Kona slopes of the Big Island, most leeward areas have experienced minimal rainfall today.

The current Small Craft Advisory remains in good shape as fresh to locally strong trades continue for the foreseeable future.

Seas likewise remain elevated through at least Wednesday due to the combination of wind waves and a pair of swells moving through the islands.
