U.S. Rep Jill Tokuda says possible government shutdown impacts more than 70,000 federal employees in Hawaii

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Pressure is mounting as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are trying to avert a government shutdown before funding runs out after midnight on Dec. 20, 2024.

“It’s always sadly better to be prepared. We are literally 12 hours away from a potential government shutdown. There has been no offer made in terms of what that Plan C, Speaker Johnson is talking about, even looks like what the perimeters are. There’s a lot of speculation out there but no actual offer, so nothing that we can actually talk about or vote on at this time. So unfortunately for many of us we’re planning for a potential government shutdown, which will impact every American in this country,” U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda tells Wake Up 2Day.

State helps provide housing for guests in need

“We have over 70-thousand workers in federal employees in Hawaii alone. So if you can imagine, we are just a few days away from Christmas and I want nothing more than to prevent a shutdown and to make sure our workers can keep getting paid, and those services you rely on, can continue to go forward. Steadily and unbroken,” said Rep. Tokuda.
