There’s a well-known charm associated with trains and rail travel, stemming from the old steam engines of the 1800s to the modern locomotive. The rhythmic sound of the tracks, the stunning views of the landscape, and the thrill of the whistle all contribute to a sense of simple and playful nostalgia. Many people in Idaho have experienced having a railroad close by or drifting off to sleep to the distant rumbling of passing trains.
Although luxury train travel is no longer available in the Gem State, there is still a special charm to be discovered in the remnants of old railbeds and ornate train stations that can be found in many cities. However, there is one abandoned railroad that stands out above all others, with a rich history spanning a century and a global reputation that has endured the passage of time. Its story is one of both beauty and sorrow.
