Two brothers survive avalanche Christmas Eve near Idaho-Utah border

Two brothers survived an avalanche Christmas Eve while snowmobiling near the Idaho-Utah border.

After being completely buried in the snow, the injured older brother was rescued by his younger brother.

On Friday, forecasters from the Utah Avalanche Center warned that avalanche conditions are widespread throughout the region and that the danger will be rising across the mountains of Northern Utah and East Idaho through the weekend.

According to the Utah Avalanche Center, the two brothers and their father were snowmobiling in Franklin Basin just south of the Idaho-Utah border on Christmas Eve.

One of the brothers triggered an avalanche while riding across the slope in Steep Hollow. He was able to ride it out, but his older brother, who was standing next to his snowmobile below the slope, was caught in the wave of snow.

The avalanche carried the older brother and his snowmobile about 150 yards, partially burying the sled and completely burying the older brother.

According to the Utah Avalanche Center report, the younger brother used a transceiver and a search pattern to locate his brother, who had just a couple fingers sticking out of the snow, and dug him out.
