Crime in Metro East appears to be ‘comparable’ after cash bail ends, chief judge, public defender say

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (First Alert 4) – Top public officials in the Metro East said crime appears to be the same one year after Illinois ended cash bail. The Pretrial Fairness Act abolished cash bail in Illinois in September 2023. The law gave judges the power to keep someone in jail or let the suspected offender wait as a free person until a court date.
