Volunteers from deep blue Illinois learn to canvas in battleground states

CHICAGO — Across the seven states likely to decide the presidential election, thousands of volunteers, including some from Illinois, are on the ground going door-to-door working to increase voter turnout.

Progressive groups on Monday night trained canvassers at Wrigleyville’s GMan Tavern. Joining them to offer pointers on how to engage voters were improv experts from The Second City. Some of the volunteers trained Monday are set to hit the ground in southeast Wisconsin this weekend in support of the Harris-Walz campaign.

“If I live on the South Side I can go to Michigan quickly. Our folks from Evanston or the north suburbs or the North Side of the city can get up to Milwaukee, do the canvas, which takes about two hours and get home for dinner,” explained Marj Halperin with Indivisible Chicago, an organization that promotes progressive values and policies, which lead the session.

Before canvassers head out, they’re doing homework on the issues so they can clear up confusion about a policy.
