CUB, Ameren Illinois spar over rate increase proposal

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — An utility watchdog group is asking the state’s commerce commission to reject Ameren Illinois’ proposed rate increase.

Earlier this month, state judges recommended it approve a $315 million hike, almost the utility company’s entire ask.

But the commission rejected Ameren’s initial request for a rate increase and the plan for their grid saying they failed to take into account affordability for customers.
So they made a change and filed an updated plan.

“We provided a comprehensive affordability framework for consideration by the Commission that looked at all all sorts of data, including the energy burden on customers and the impact of the increased rates on on customers bills,” Matt Tomc, Ameren Illinois VP of Regulatory Policy and Energy Supply, said.

Now, Ameren Illinois is asking for a $334 million rate increase. And earlier this month, state regulatory judges recommended a $314 million increase for the company, about 90 percent of their original ask.
