Illinois bill aims to regulate use of AI in health insurance

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) – Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a major tool in a number of fields. Now, one lawmaker is looking to regulate how insurance companies use the technology.

“AI is being used in health care in a variety of ways, but increasingly, health insurance companies are using claims administration and adjudication of a claim, approval or denial, looking at whether or not they’re suspending a claim, maybe they’re going to change your medication,” State Rep. Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield) said.

Morgan is sponsoring a bill that would give the Illinois Department of Insurance oversight including if companies use AI to deny a claim or insurance coverage. It would also require companies to tell people if the technology is being used in that process.

“We have to make sure that we’re not creating a new barrier between patients and their doctors and their health care professionals, getting access to the medications they need or the services and the surgeries that their doctors prescribe for them,” Morgan said.
